BIO-Why do we sleep?

Excellent information and research. The issues faced by teens are especially important because their entire mental system is under such change during the teen years that complicating those changes with sleep loss must have seriously damaging impacts.
I am also interested in the effects of late night watching of violent television programming on restful and rejuvenating sleep. Many "cop shows" and other violent types of programming are broadcast late in the evening. These images and the intense emotions elicited by these shows are often the last things going into the minds of TV viewers just before they sleep. How can people sleep restfully after these shows? Does watching them contribute to the feelings of fear and paranoia that seem to govern so much of our nation's thought about security, the war on terror, and other safety issues?
